Erin Gorczyca

Survivor

2019 has been the toughest year of my life. I started the year with a planned procedure to have part of my large intestine removed due to repetitive diverticulitis attacks. (Sepsis and Surgery) At first, everything seemed to go perfect. Unfortunately, with every surgery there comes a risk, and I was part of the 1% of patients that ends up with a problem. During my colon resection, there was a teeny, tiny crease which led to a pinhead size hole. That hole allowed a little leakage which led to an infection, however, I didn’t exhibit any signs of infection. (Sepsis and Perforated Bowel) All post-surgery tests and blood work indicated everything was normal, so I was sent home.

The next 4 days were unbearable! My pain was getting worse instead of getting better. Back to the hospital I went and my family heard the terrible news: “Erin has sepsis, she is in septic shock and she is fighting for her life”. My kidneys, liver and bowels were almost completely shut down. My legs were mottling – mottling skin usually occurs during the final week of life. Death was knocking on my door and the next 48 hours were crucial. Death not only knocked on my door, he opened it and stared me straight in the eyes. But I fought hard and I slammed that door shut! 28% chance of living, 27 days in ICU, 10 surgeries in 18 days, around the clock dialysis, 6.5 weeks in the hospital, relearning how to walk, getting through a failure to thrive diagnosis, fighting to stay on this earth with my family and friends…I’m a survivor! I’m here and I’m stronger than ever. There is power in prayers. Believe in miracles. I am living proof they exist! ❤️
