Gwen G.

Survivor

I had a breast reduction on December 21, 2022. I was two weeks post-op and feeling great. Then it hit me, shaking, fever, chills, high heart rate, leg pain, and brain fog. (Sepsis and Surgery) I drove myself to the emergency room with a fever of 103. My ER doctor saved my life.

My white blood cell count was sky high and my blood work was showing a left shift. I had sepsis. I thought I was going to be more afraid, but I knew I had to fight. They found a 13cm abscess in my left breast. This would turn out to be a staph infection. (Sepsis and Bacterial Infections) After tons of antibiotics, I was diagnosed with an acute kidney injury. I had to stay in the hospital even longer because of this. I was terrified.

Everyone was on winter break having a good time and I was stuck in the hospital. I was transferred to another hospital where my abscess was drained. After 8 days in the hospital, I was free to go home but I still felt the effects. I have two open wounds that continue to heal. I myself, am healing in other ways too. I want to raise awareness about sepsis. I survived. I had doctors who listened and acted. I listened to my body and it saved my life.
