My father passed away at 61 due to organ failure caused by septic shock.

My father was a diabetic and it all started with a check of his diabetes, after analysis and x-rays they found he had an enlarged prostate and would need to operate. The operation was successful, and he was sent home with a urinary catheter for 20 days. This worried me as I know that diabetics having a catheter for a prolonged time are at a higher risk of serious infection.  Once the catheter was removed, my father began to have a fever and chills. I let his doctor know and they prescribed him antibiotics. (Sepsis and Diabetes, Sepsis and Surgery, Sepsis and Invasive Devices)

During another check of his diabetes, his bloodwork showed high white blood cells and acidity in his blood. He was immediately admitted to the hospital for 5 days where he received blood transfusions and hemodialysis twice a week.

A few weeks later, my father began to vomit but he said it’s probably something he ate that didn’t sit well. The next day, he continued vomiting and my mother decided to take him to the hospital. It took them a few hours to treat him, which were crucial due to the danger of sepsis. He began to have difficulty breathing, confusion, and low blood pressure, which is why he was admitted to the intensive care unit. His prognosis was grave and remained in the ICU for 11 days. The last 2 days his tests showed improvement and he was moved out of ICU a day before he was to be discharged. Sepsis had caused him to have brain damage, critical kidney damage, and damage to his heart, lungs and joints. He could not stand or walk and needed a diaper.

A day after his first at-home peritoneal dialysis, he passed away.  We never had any answers as to what happened to him because the doctors told us he was stable before sending him home.

It is important to be aware of sepsis, many people don’t know about it and what the symptoms are. If my father had gone to the hospital when he started vomiting, he would most likely have survived. Every minute in the case of sepsis counts. The longer you go untreated, the less chance of life you will have.

Rest in Peace my dear Father. We will always love you. You were the best father, friend, brother, grandfather and husband.

Mi padre falleció a los 61 años de edad a causa de fallo orgánico por shock séptico.

Mi padre era diabético, todo empezó con un chequeo de su diabetes; luego de unos análisis y radiografías descubrieron que tenía la próstata agrandada y debían operarlo. La operación salió bien y fue enviado a casa con una sonda urinaria por unos 20 días. A partir de ahí me preocupe mucho por el , ya que sé que las sondas al permanecer tanto tiempo en personas con diabetes pueden causar serias infecciones. Luego de retirada la sonda mi padre empezó a sentirse mal, con fiebre y escalofríos. Aviso a su médico y le indicó antibióticos. Al regresar a su chequeo de seguimiento de la diabetes sus análisis de sangre mostraron un conteo de globos blancos bastante elevados y mucha acidez en su sangre. Lo ingresaron de inmediato al centro médico donde permaneció 5 días , se le transfundió sangre y empezó un régimen de hemodiálisis dos veces a la semana. Un par de semanas después mi padre empezó a vomitar aunque el decía que estaba bien, que posiblemente algo le había caído mal. Al día siguiente continuó con los vómitos, por lo que mi madre decidió llevarlo al Centro médico. Tardaron en atenderlo unas horas las cuales fueron cruciales debido a lo peligroso de las sepsis, empezó a tener dificultad para respirar, confusión y presión arterial baja por lo que fue ingresado en la unidad de cuidados intensivos. Su pronóstico era grave, permaneció 11 dias en UCI , los cuales los últimos dos mostró una mejoría en los análisis médicos por lo cual fue sacado de UCI y llevado a una habitación donde permaneció un día antes de darle el alta médica. La sepsis causó daños en su cerebro, daño renal crítico , a su corazón, pulmones y articulaciones. No podía pararse y caminar y debía usar pañal . Ya en casa falleció un día después antes de recibir su primera diálisis peritoneal. Nunca tuvimos una respuesta de lo que le sucedió, porque los médicos nos dijeron que estaba estable en sus análisis antes de enviarlo a casa.

Es importante tomar conciencia acerca de la sepsis, muchas personas no saben sobre esto y cuáles son los síntomas de esta afección. Si mi padre hubiese ido al hospital al momento que empezó a vomitar muy probablemente hubiese sobrevivido. Cada minuto en el caso de sepsis cuenta, Mientras más tiempo pases sin ser tratado, menos probabilidades de vida tendrás.

Descansa en Paz mi querido Padre. Siempre te amaremos. Fuiste el mejor padre, amigo , hermano, abuelo y esposo.
