In March of 2012 I was 19 weeks pregnant, and got a kidney infection, which resulted in a right-sided nephrostomy bag. (Sepsis and Urinary Tract Infections) Then four weeks later, when I was 23 weeks pregnant, I had pain in my left side so I called my urologist. He said it wasn’t possible to have another kidney infection, so I took my pain meds and put up with it. Then two days later, Sunday morning I awoke to excruciating pain on my left side!! I was so scared! My mom took me to the emergency room. (Sepsis and Pregnancy & Childbirth)
The doctors first checked on the baby and did a test to see if she would be born within the next 2 weeks – negative. So then they checked my left kidney and realized I needed another surgery for a second nephrostomy bag. After the surgery I was so sick with e.coli and gram negative rods they put me in ICU. That night I had a hard time breathing and was in a lot of pain!
A day went by and that morning I was having pains in my pregnant belly. The ob nurse checked and realized I was having real contractions. Then the ob doctor came in and checked me…I was FULLY dialated!! I was in complete shock and so scared!
They gave me 2 bags of blood since my blood wasn’t good for delivery. Then the doctor told me that my daughter wouldn’t be born alive. I prayed to God and finally pushed her out, but didn’t look – only a glance at her. Thankfully she was alive, barely, only 1 pound and 10 inches long.
I started declining quickly and had trouble breathing. The doctor told me to put on the strongest bi-pap mask, but I kept fighting it off. He said if you don’t keep it on, we will have to put you in a medically induced coma. Thankfully I kept on the bi-pap.
I was in the ICU and MICU for a week then the renal unit for 10 days. I couldn’t eat or bathe or walk for a while. I had to learn to walk again which was painful emotionally and physically.
My daughter spent 6 months in the NICU and fought for her life. She is my miracle and I’m blessed we both made it.
