Lorey Duprey

Survivor

On April 3, 2019, I woke up in the middle of the night shaking uncontrollably. I knew something wasn’t right, but I couldn’t wake my husband. So I laid back down and woke again a few hours later and was sick. I spent most of the next day in pain on my left glute, sick. I started think I had the worst case of the flu I ever had.

As the day turned into night, I asked my husband to check my glute, and he insisted I needed to go to the hospital. I was admitted shortly after arriving. I received high doses of antibiotics and was monitored throughout the day.

On the evening of April 4th, the surgeon came in. It was the most surreal moment of my life as he looked at me and told me I was dying, and if they didn’t operate within the hour I would be dead. He laid out the plan of taking me into surgery ASAP, arranging for a life flight to a larger hospital for more surgeries, and putting me into a drug induced coma. I had sepsis and necrotizing fasciitis, all caused by the strep A group infection. (Sepsis and Necrotizing Fasciitis, Sepsis and Group A Strep) I would undergo four surgeries, spend ten days in the hospital, months of wound dressing changes, and two more surgeries, the most recent on January 20, 2020.

During this ordeal I also lost my job of almost 20 years. This sent me into the worst depression I have ever endured. But I’m still here, I have come out on the other side and I’m looking forward to a new start. This has brought my husband and I closer, and allowed us time together again. The future, although uncertain, is bright.
