Sharon Taylor

Survivor

On the 16th of November 2018, I was admitted for a routine operation to finally sort out an ongoing pilonidal (cyst) problem.(Sepsis and Surgery) The surgery was deemed a success and I was able to go home the following day ( Saturday the 17th).  Other than feeling sore and bruised I felt ok and was looking forward to healing and getting on with Christmas preparations etc.

On the Sunday during the day I began to feel exhausted and a little fluey so I took myself to bed and my fiancé took over with the kids. During the night and into Monday morning, things got worse, the pain was unbearable, I could not sit still from it. I was shaking violently and dry heaving. By the morning my fiancé said I felt hot and I did have a fever. The rest is a bit of a blur, but I was told to go to A+E immediately.

The triage nurse did my obs and I was rushed through to resus. My heart rate was 144, my blood pressure was 87/48. I was immediately put on IV fluids and antibiotics. I have little memory of the next few days as I was in high dependency but I remember being terrified. My wound was aspirated and I had triple IV therapy. By the 4th day I was out the woods, but I am still exhausted and understand how different it may have been. Thank goodness for the NHS.
