Norman C.

Survivor

First, I want to tell you a little about my husband, Norm. Before his illness, Norm was a physician for 17 years in a small town in Texas. He worked in many Emergency Rooms helping and serving our small towns surrounding the area. He is a combat veteran and purple heart recipient. He served our amazing country and his patients with pride and integrity.

March 1, 2020, I took my husband to the ER in our small town. He was complaining of nausea, vomiting, fever, abdominal and flank pain. Due to unfortunate circumstances, he wasn’t treated for or diagnosis with SEPSIS for the next three days. The prolongation of treatment did significant damage to my husband’s body. Norm ended up losing his sigmoid colon, spleen, appendix, and was left with a colostomy bag for six months. He now deals with Post Sepsis Syndrome daily.

He suffers from cognitive deficiency, global weakness, reoccurring infections, PTSD, sleepless nights, and is immunocompromised. These are just a few of the symptoms he deals with as an aftermath to SEPSIS. The effect it has had on our children and me is another story. Norm has done multiple neurological evaluations and is no longer fit to provide care to patients anymore. That is one of the hardest realizations in this whole situation. Norm can no longer do what he loves and worked so hard for. My main reason for sharing our story is to show SEPSIS doesn’t discriminate. He is a doctor and it happened to him. If you know something isn’t right with your body don’t stop fighting for yourself. I wish all the survivors and families well during these difficult times. Thank you for letting me share his story.
