Natasha Hellen Kimani

Tribute

My girl, called Natasha Hellen, aged two (2) years started complaining of stomach pain one early morning after eating a banana at 11am. She was taken to a local hospital by her mother while she was still crying. The doctor casually gave her some medications saying it was “probably gas stuck in there and she had overfed.” However the medicine didn’t work.

The following morning she was still crying. We took her to another hospital where CT scans were performed and the pediatrician said she needed to be seen by a surgeon as her appendix was looking bad and they could see gas trapped in her stomach. They recommended surgery which they told us was to remove the appendix.

They operated her and found her appendix was OK. They did an exploratory surgery on her abdomen. They told us they found a bloody fluid on her peritoneal fluid. However she started convulsing and she was rushed to ICU machine and put on so many fluids, including antibiotics. On her 4th day at the ICU, she suffered multiple organ failure, sepsis shock, and passed on 21st March 2016 at 2pm.

Sometimes I regret why I signed her form to be operated. I think the surgery deteriorated her so much as she didn’t wake up from the theater. I feel cheated by doctors who didn’t take time to see if she had an infection in the stomach instead of been fixed in their minds that she needed to be operated.S he deteriorated so fast on the machine. Later we were told that she had sepsis. I and my wife miss our baby so much. We are still mourning
