Jacky McNamara

Survivor

I have had kidney stones for the past 5 years or so. (Sepsis and Kidney Stones) I always knew when they were trying to pass due to the severe pain in my back. In August 2016 I was out with my daughter and granddaughter when the familiar pain started. I decided to go home and went to bed to try and ease the pain and the next thing I knew it was 2 days later and I was still in my bed. I felt so ill that I called my brother and asked him to take me to my local A&E, which he did and we arrived approximately 8 am.

I was seen by the triage nurse and within 5 minutes was taken to resus. A doctor inserted a tube in my neck and rushed me to surgery. I woke up thinking that it was the same day only to be told by a nurse that I had been in a coma for 10 days and it was in fact 2 weeks since being admitted. I was shocked. I was then informed that whilst in a coma I had contracted E. coli and also had a heart attack.

I spent a further 2 weeks in hospital recovering and learning how to walk.
I am so amazed at the dedication of the hospital staff that nursed me back to health and am eternally thankful that I have now almost fully recovered.
Reading other survivors stories I know I am lucky to have escape virtually unscathed and thank god every day for this.

I hadn’t heard of sepsis until I contracted it myself but hope that wonderful sites like this help to raise awareness of this awful disease.
