Donna Rae Young

Tribute

My story is about my loving Mother Donna Rae Young. Her story is short. She became ill in July 2011 with a throat infection, spent a week in the hospital, and was never the same. That following October, my mother had a slight fever for a few days.

They did a follow-up at the doctor’s office. The nurse called later that day and said get your Mom to the ER stat. Her INR level [how long it takes for blood to clot] was 12. We were in the ER within the hour. Mom seemed to become sicker as the hours passed and was admitted to the telemetry floor [where patients are on heart monitors]. She had a heart pacer, so this was protocol.

Through the night Mom kept complaining of being short of breath and wasn’t herself. She spent the next two days on the tele floor, getting weaker and her breathing was becoming concerning. They did blood cultures [test for bacteria]. They mentioned my mother could be septic. The next morning she was rushed to critical care and was intubated.

That evening we were told she was positive for sepsis. We never spoke to our mother again. She passed within 18 hours of being intubated. We had to make quick decisions on how we wanted to let our beloved Mother go. A piece of my heart left with her that day as she slipped away to Heaven, October 9, 2011.

We Love you Mom, until we meet again!
