My mom had scalded her foot in the bath tub one night. The foot became infected and she was admitted to the hospital. (Sepsis and Bacterial Infections) While she was in the hospital, her doctor did an endoscopy and colonoscopy.

She stayed in the hospital for a couple days after that, but wanted desperately to come home. After being home for four days I found her in her bed struggling to get out of it. She didn’t speak to me and she just sat in a chair I had put her in and stared out the window. We called the ambulance and got her to the hospital. The tests from the first hospital stay, while she was there for her foot, said she had diverticulitis and a non-cancerous mass in her colon.

She went straight to ICU, they operated on her and removed part of her colon to take out the mass and did what ever else to clear up her infection. Apparently there was a tear in her intestines. (Sepsis and Perforated Bowel) I’m not clear on all the details, but I think after the endoscopy and colonoscopy they wanted her to stay in for a few more days to observe her, but she didn’t. I also feel with all my heart that when they did these tests they didn’t realize she had diverticulitis and during these tests accidentally tore something when they were in there.

She was admitted to ICU on a Wednesday and died four days later, early Sunday morning, she was only 77. My 98 year old Grandmother died of sepsis that year as well. Sepsis is an undercover killer, it silently attacks and takes you out quick!
