Steve Maupin has joined the Board of Directors of Sepsis Alliance, the nation’s leading patient advocacy organization promoting sepsis awareness. Mr. Maupin’s business experience and personal experience with the healthcare system brings valuable insight to the board.

San Diego, California – January 9, 2015 – Sepsis Alliance, the nation’s leading patient advocacy organization promoting sepsis awareness, today announced that Steve Maupin has joined its Board of Directors. Maupin is the practice leader for Alvarez and Marsal’s Performance Improvements Healthcare Practice. He focuses on the convergence of high technology and medicine, where he helps clients understand how to apply systems engineering and technology solutions to healthcare challenges. His most recent engagement is focused on reducing preventable harms, especially sepsis, and improving patient and family engagement in critical care.

His personal engagement comes from having to navigate the healthcare system for both a family member and himself. In 2008, Maupin donated a kidney to a friend, but he subsequently required ICU care because of multiple hospital-acquired conditions. Sepsis, sometimes called blood poisoning by the general public, is a medical emergency that occurs when the body’s response to infection begins to injure its own tissues and organs. It is estimated that 258,000 people in the U.S. die every year from sepsis, a preventable condition requiring early diagnosis and rapid treatment.

“We are happy that Steve Maupin accepted to become a member of our Board of Directors,” said Dr. Jim O’Brien, Sepsis Alliance Medical Director and Board Chair. “Adding someone to the board who has personal and professional experience in the healthcare field provides us with a broader view of what needs to be done to further our mission of spreading sepsis awareness.”
