Sepsis Alliance Partners with The National Minority Health Association to Strengthen Reach this Sepsis Awareness Month

September 28, 2023

Sepsis Alliance is pleased to partner with The National Minority Health Association (NMHA) to share the newly launched Spanish, Chinese, and Tagalog sepsis resources. The NMHA will also be sharing information about Sepsis Alliance’s new live site translation feature, which makes the valuable information on sepsis.org accessible to a larger population of people.

Sepsis, the body’s overwhelming and toxic response to infection, takes 350,000 adult lives in the U.S. each year. The burden of sepsis is not evenly spread though. Black and “other nonwhite individuals have nearly twice the incidence of sepsis as white individuals. Black and Hispanic individuals also have a higher incidence of severe sepsis, compared to white individuals. In response to these staggering disparities, Sepsis Alliance has called health sector stakeholders to work together to ensure better, more culturally competent, and more accessible healthcare for all people. As part of this pledge, Sepsis Alliance has been working to create a more accessible website with more materials available in languages other than English.

The NMHA is also a nonprofit organization with a mission to close the disparity gap in minority health care. Through this partnership, the NMHA will be sharing information about Sepsis Alliance’s new accessibility resources with their audience, to help more people learn about sepsis signs and symptoms.

“Sepsis Alliance is dedicated to saving more lives and limbs from sepsis, and we know English speakers are not the only ones affected by this devastating condition,” said Thomas Heymann, Sepsis Alliance President and CEO. “It is our hope that these are just early steps toward making all Sepsis Alliance resources available in all languages, so everybody has access to the information that will help them identify sepsis sooner to seek care.”

Sepsis Alliance thanks the NMHA for their valuable work to create a more equitable healthcare sector, and their support of our multi-language resources.

About Sepsis Alliance

Sepsis Alliance, the first and leading sepsis organization in the U.S., seeks to save lives and reduce suffering by improving sepsis awareness and care. More than 1.7 million people are diagnosed with sepsis each year in the U.S. with more than 350,000 adults dying and over 50% of survivors experiencing post-sepsis syndrome and other lingering effects, including amputations. At Sepsis Alliance’s founding in 2003, only 19% of U.S. adults were aware of the term “sepsis.” After over ten years of educational efforts for the general public and healthcare professionals through Sepsis.org, Sepsis Alliance Institute, and Sepsis Alliance Voices, awareness is at 66%. Over 30,000 healthcare professionals across the country have attended sepsis webinars and courses to elevate their practice.
