Breaking News: Governor Moore Signs Lochlin’s Law in Maryland!
May 16, 2024

Today, Lochlin’s Law was passed in Maryland! Early this morning, Governor Wes Moore signed the legislation, passing it into state law. Lochlin’s Law will expand sepsis protocols and education throughout Maryland, in hospitals and urgent care centers alike. Sepsis Alliance is pleased to have supported this legislation.
Among other provisions, Lochlin’s Law requires each hospital and urgent care center in Maryland to implement an evidence-based protocol for the early recognition and treatment of a patient with sepsis, severe sepsis, or septic shock. Hospitals and urgent care centers will also be required to conduct periodic trainings in the implementation of the protocol for certain staff. These changes must be implemented on or before January 1, 2025.
Lochlin’s Law is named for Lochlin DeSantis, a young boy who passed away from sepsis after a flu infection. His parents, Brooke and William DeSantis, developed this law in his honor. They also run the Love for Lochlin Foundation, which won the 2023 Erin Kay Flatley Spirit Award.
Congratulations to the DeSantis family and all Marylanders who worked to support this important legislation! Lochlin’s Law will help to improve sepsis awareness and care, saving lives and limbs throughout Maryland.
