15 Years With Sepsis Alliance – Part Three

January 17, 2022

In 2022, Sepsis Alliance is celebrating 15 years of advocacy, education, and support for sepsis survivors, caregivers, medical providers, and those who have lost their lives to sepsis.

What started out of tragedy has become the leading sepsis organization in the U.S., dedicated to saving lives and reducing suffering by improving sepsis awareness and care.

Sepsis Alliance was founded in 2007 by Carl Flatley, DDS, MSD, whose daughter Erin died unnecessarily of sepsis when she was 23 years old. Dr. Flatley, now a retired endodontist, had never heard of sepsis before Erin’s diagnosis. When he tried to learn more about sepsis, he found nothing. Spurred into action, Dr. Flatley founded Sepsis Alliance to educate others about the condition that took his daughter’s life, and that now takes the lives of over 270,000 others in the U.S. every year.

You, our supporters, have made a huge impact on our work, and in your communities as sepsis advocates. In the 15 years since its inception, Sepsis Alliance has worked diligently to provide education, resources, and support to save lives and limbs, and your support has been imperative to our work. To reflect upon and honor these years of service, we have compiled 15 of our top achievements since 2007.

This is part three of a series. Check back on Mondays to see what else made the list! Read part one and part two

10. Sepsis Awareness Superhero Challenge

Sepsis Awareness Superheroes unite! That has been the rallying cry of Sepsis Alliance’s national, virtual Sepsis Awareness Superhero Challenge, which just celebrated its fifth year. Advocates are encouraged to register, build teams, fundraise, then walk/run/swim/dance one mile in September to raise sepsis awareness. The 2021 event was the largest yet: over 400 participants raised over $110,000 for sepsis awareness!

11. Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Pledge

In early 2021, Sepsis Alliance made a public pledge to foster equity, diversity, and inclusion in our work and in the sepsis care community. In our pledge, we recognize that historical and societal systems and community resource disparities create stark healthcare gaps, including in sepsis care. Sepsis Alliance bears responsibility for working to address these disparities, as part of the larger healthcare sector.

Sepsis Alliance Internal Pledge to Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion

In addition to our internal pledge, Sepsis Alliance released an external pledge, which calls on our partner organizations to join us. All organizations working to mitigate the global challenges associated with antimicrobial resistance, sepsis, and infectious diseases have a role to play.

Sepsis Alliance External Pledge to Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion

Those of us who serve patients and survivors must ensure better, more culturally competent, and more accessible healthcare for all people. This is a critical, life-saving fight.

12. Sepsis Alliance Summit

Given the popularity and proven need for Sepsis Alliance Institute offerings, Sepsis Alliance produced the first Sepsis Alliance Summit in 2020. Set to coincide with Sepsis Awareness Month, the Sepsis Alliance Summit is now an annual, multi-day, virtual conference for healthcare professionals, exploring an array of sepsis-related topics in healthcare. The 2020 inaugural event attracted over 4,000 registrants and awarded thousands of continuing education credit hours.

This was a great [Sepsis Alliance] Summit and a great introduction to my role as a Sepsis Coordinator. I loved that the speakers were interdisciplinary – a good mixture of MDs, DOs, Nurses, and DNPs. It served to help me rediscover why I’m so passionate about sepsis identification and treatment. Thank you!
