Patrick Baker

Tribute

My husband of 3 years, Patrick Baker was taken by sepsis May 20, 2011, at age 35. It started off in July 2010, with a broken ankle that needed surgery. After surgery my husband complained of a lot of pain, he had immense swelling, high fevers and nausea.

The doctors diagnosed him with Chronic Regional Pain syndrome. They decided to perform another surgery to take out the pins to help with pain. From there, everything went downhill.

Since he was already diagnosed with CRPS, the warning signs were hidden. Three months later his doctors realized he had gotten osteomyelitis, a severe bone infection. We were in the ER on a Tuesday because Patrick needed plasma. He was put on Coumadin for a blood clot that he received from his PIC line for antibiotics.

Patrick was very sick, lethargic, feverish, and nauseated. He was sent home. On Thursday he was more sick than ever, delusional, and passing out. I called the ambulance and he was put in the ICU of our local hospital. They informed me he was very sick and infected but he should be out in two weeks.

On Friday afternoon he passed. He was completely coherent, we were having a conversation and all of a sudden he said he was tired. He never woke up. His organs were tired from fighting almost a year, and they shut down.

My husband was an amazing man, very smart, and in good shape. He had a nursing background and even he didn’t realize the signs. Please force your doctors to check everything, go through every possibility and research for yourself. My husband ended up seeing 7 different doctors by the time he passed, and not one of them saved him.
