Maureen Limb

Tribute

Our mother was rushed into hospital following 3 home visits following an acute case of vomiting followed by severe pain. Because our mum had been a sufferer of rheumatoid arthritis for 24 years the GPs who visited her assumed mum was suffering a flare up.  (Sepsis and Autoimmune Diseases) This was not the case. Unfortunately mum was not assessed by any of the GPs and was left in severe pain for a week before bring admitted as a 999 call. Mum had all the signs of sepsis but sadly these were missed.

The paramedics who attended her however knew instinctively what the problem was and admitted her to hospital. Mum under went surgery to flush infection from her knee finger and toe and was hospitalised for 6 weeks of IV antibiotics. After 5 weeks in hospital we were given the devastating news that the infection had caused an aortic anursym which was also infected.

We were hopeful mum would live with this new complication, which was directly caused by infection and the sepsis as we were told many patient did.
Two weeks later and after 7 weeks in hospital and one week in the critical care unit, we were called to the hospital and told our beloved mother was in a serious condition and that the aneurysm had ruptured.

Our mother passed away on 13th May 2016 at 2.10pm.

We were in total shock and disbelief.

Education is everything. If the health professionals had educated themselves in the symptoms of sepsis and better still educated our mother and her family of the risks she faced with infection we might have saved her.

Please share our story and please support the sepsis organisation in circulating the information on their website.

Our beautiful mother has lost her life and we will never forget how and why this happened
