Destiny Wolfe

Survivor

I was struck with Sepsis on Aug 5th 2010. I was on life support for 5 weeks. I had a leak in my intestine and didn’t know it. My abdominal cavity was full of feces. Therefore it was getting into my bloodstream, causing sepsis.

They didn’t think I was going to survive. I had 5 blood transfusions. I was bleeding out of all my pores on my skin. My body was trying to get rid of the poison. My brain was swollen. My lungs kept filling to ¾ and they were continuously suctioning my lungs with the vent, the feeding tube, and the suctioning damaged my vocal cords. When I woke up, I could only whisper. It took about 2 months to get my voice back and it is still very raspy, kind of like Demi Moore. I have to keep my throat wet.

They were going to do a bedside tracheotomy. The night before they were to do it, my mother had her pastor come in and pray over me and anoint me with Holy Water. The next morning, they came in to do it when they removed the life support system, I STARTED BREATHING ON MY OWN AND BY NOON I HAD OPENED MY EYES FOR THE 1ST TIME IN 5 WEEKS!! GOD IS GOOD.

Now, I was very, very confused and had some hallucinations because some of the medication they used to keep me out was still in my system. I had to go through swallowing tests and a lot of other tests. It really is all a blur to me. They sent me to a nursing home as I couldn’t even feed myself. I couldn’t roll from side to side. I had a terrible time trying to sleep. I had to have 9 months of physical and occupational therapy. I have NOT WALKED SINCE AUG 2010. While I was in septic shock, a disease attacked my thoracic spinal cord, damaging my spinal cord. I have partial paralysis from the waist down and there’s nothing they can do. So, I am alive thank the lord but I’ll never walk again.

They gave me 3 to 5 years to live because they said my insides are junked. I blame GASTRIC BYPASS that I had in 2003. I hope you all understand my story. Feel free to email me with any questions. Thanks for reading my story. I do suffer PTSD from the whole ordeal. Thank you.
