Governor Tommy Thompson, sepsis, stop sepsis, save lives

Sepsis Alliance is proud to name Tommy G. Thompson, the former Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary and four-term Governor of Wisconsin, as a 2019 Sepsis Hero. Governor Thompson served as HHS Secretary from 2001 to 2005 and is one of the nation’s leading health and welfare advocates.

Governor Thompson is the leader of the Stop Sepsis, Save Lives Coalition, a new organization of patient advocacy groups and healthcare companies that aims to support increased sepsis awareness and the importance of early diagnosis and appropriate intervention.

In 2001, Governor Thompson introduced the Quality Initiative of the Department of Health and Human Services, which was expanded in 2003 to include the Hospital Quality Initiative (HQI). These initiatives played an important role as advocacy and physician groups advocated for change in sepsis care. This resulted in the push for development and recognition of a new Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) core measure called SEP-1.

Governor Thompson’s work in helping improve sepsis care is an example of what people can do to make a difference in the health of people across the country. For this reason, Sepsis Alliance has named Governor Thompson a 2019 Sepsis Hero.
