Sepsis Alliance Featured in Healthgrades Report on Rising Incidence of Sepsis, and the Role Top-Tier Hospitals Can Play in Saving Lives

March 2, 2016

San Diego, California – March 2, 2016 – Sepsis Alliance is honored to be featured prominently in a recent report published by Healthgrades titled, “Major Differences in Improvement in Treating Sepsis for Distinguished Hospital Recipients.” Within the report, Healthgrades noticed a direct correlation between top-rated hospitals and improvements those hospitals had made in providing sepsis care to patients.

Healthgrades empowers web visitors to search, compare, and connect with hospitals, physicians, and other medical providers. Each year, Healthgrades recognizes those hospitals that achieve rankings in the top 5% of hospitals across the country. As part of its announcement of the 2016 recipients of its Distinguished Hospital Awards for Clinical Excellence (DHACE), Healthgrades took the extra step of releasing a report analyzing how Distinguished Hospital recipients outperform their peers in the treatment of sepsis.

Over a three year period, Healthgrades noticed a marked improvement in how these award-winning hospitals treated sepsis. In diving through the numbers, Healthgrades discovered that the care teams at these top-tier hospitals were actually outperforming in their treatment of sepsis.

Further analysis also showed that improvement in the treatment of sepsis observed at DHACE recipient hospitals was significantly related to improved quality outcomes in treating other emergent hospital cohorts, such as heart failure, COPD, pneumonia, stroke and respiratory failure.

“This report is important because it shows that improvements in sepsis care were associated with being a top hospital,” added Jim O’Brien, MD, MSc who Chairs Sepsis Alliance’s Board of Directors. “So if you want to be a top hospital, work on improving sepsis care. Interestingly, you may also find better sepsis care produces better outcomes for patients with other conditions, as well.”

Sepsis Alliance salutes the work of Healthgrades in analyzing sepsis outcomes among its award recipients, and thanks them for raising the awareness of sepsis along the way. To review the full report, please visit:
