April 24, 2017

The nation’s leading sepsis advocacy organization has announced that Steve Maupin has been elected as Chair of the Board of Directors. Maupin is the practice leader for Alvarez and Marsal’s Business Consulting’s Healthcare Practice in San Francisco, who focuses on the convergence of high technology and medicine.

Sepsis Alliance, the nation’s leading sepsis advocacy organization, is pleased to announce that Steve Maupin has been elected as Chair of the organization’s Board of Directors. A senior advisor at Alvarez and Marsal in San Francisco, specializing in healthcare business consulting, Maupin’s professional experience focuses on the convergence of high technology and medicine. He succeeds Dr. Jim O’Brien, MD, MCs, who served as Board Chair for six years, and will remain on the Board of Directors.

“It’s been a tremendous honor to serve as the Board Chair for the last six years, and I look forward to continuing our efforts under Steve’s leadership,” said Dr. Jim O’Brien. “Steve has been a terrific asset to Sepsis Alliance’s mission, and I’m excited to see the organization continue to grow under his direction.”

Maupin has served on Sepsis Alliance’s Board of Directors since January 2015, and brings valuable leadership and knowledge from his business and personal experience within the healthcare system. At Alvarez and Marsal, Maupin helps clients understand how to apply systems engineering and technology solutions to health care challenges. One of his recent engagements focused on reducing preventable harms, including sepsis, and improving patient and family engagement in critical care.

Maupin also has a strong personal interest in improving the quality of healthcare and how patients and families are engaged in the care delivery process. Having lost a wife cancer and having spent time in the ICU from medical errors during a kidney donation, he has an intimate knowledge of the challenges of navigating our complex healthcare ecosystem, as well as a firsthand appreciation for the importance of patient safety.

“I’m excited to take on this new role on the Board of Directors and thank Jim for his many years of leadership,” said Steve Maupin.

Sepsis Alliance would like to sincerely thank Dr. O’Brien for his outstanding leadership and invaluable contributions to the organization during his tenure as Board Chair.
