Sepsis Alliance Announces New Conference for Leaders in Sepsis Care

February 10, 2022

This April, Sepsis Alliance is expanding into education for healthcare leaders with the launch of a new event, the Sepsis Alliance Leadership Conference: Empowering Improvements in Care, presented by T2 Biosystems and bioMérieux. With this free, one-day virtual event, Sepsis Alliance hopes to energize healthcare executives and decision-makers, specifically those with the power to implement sepsis care improvements and move the needle on patient outcomes in their institutions.

Sepsis remains the number one cause of death in U.S. hospitals. It takes the lives of more than 270,000 Americans every year and causes an estimated 14,000 amputations in those who survive. It is also the number one cost of hospitalizations in the United States, with a price tag of $62 billion per year for in-patient hospital care and skilled nursing costs alone. An epidemic of such size does not leave any community unimpacted, but sepsis disproportionately impacts very young children, older adults, immunocompromised persons, and those who have historically lacked access to quality healthcare, including some communities of color and individuals experiencing poverty.

Executives and leaders in healthcare face countless daily challenges, from bolstering clinical insight and driving innovation to pursuing equity and improving the bottom line. But leaders face additional challenges specific to sepsis, a complex, costly, and difficult-to-diagnose condition. “The need for improvement in sepsis care extends across hospitals, health systems, and the entire continuum of care,” says Claudia Orth, BSN, RN, Director of Provider Education and Training for Sepsis Alliance. “But we often look to leadership for some of the most innovative initiatives, and for new systems that can make a difference. Sepsis care improvements really can start at the top.”

The Sepsis Alliance Leadership Conference: Empowering Improvements in Care, which will take place on April 6, 2022, will place a spotlight on the role healthcare executives and leadership can play in improving awareness, recognition, diagnosis, and treatment of sepsis. The conference will offer attendees the opportunity to engage with sepsis leaders and subject matter experts from across the country. Attendees will learn how to:

  • Identify tools and resources for driving organizational change and innovation in sepsis care;
  • Increase awareness of best practices and excellence in organizational sepsis culture;
  • Seek creative solutions to engage frontline healthcare providers in sepsis improvement initiatives.

Expert speakers will include:

  • James Guliano (Vice President, Operations and Chief Clinical Officer, Ohio Hospital Association);
  • Armando Nahum (Co-Founder & President, Safe Care Campaign);
  • David Mayer (Executive Director, MedStar Institute for Quality and Safety).

Registration is now open at SepsisLeadership.org. Like the successful Sepsis Alliance Summit and Sepsis Tech & Innovation, this conference will be hosted on the Whova platform, and will offer continuing nursing education credits for attendees
