Sepsis Alliance Announces New Chief Medical Officer

Sepsis Alliance is pleased to announce the appointment of a new Chief Medical Officer: Cindy Hou, DO, MA, MBA, CIC, CPHQ, FACOI, FACP, FIDSA. Dr. Hou has served actively on the Sepsis Alliance Board of Directors since 2020, providing medical insight, interviews, and expertise to further Sepsis Alliance’s mission of saving lives and reducing suffering by improving sepsis awareness and care.

Dr. Hou serves as the Infection Control Officer and Medical Director of Research for  Jefferson Health-New Jersey. Additionally, she is the physician lead for Jefferson Health-New Jersey’s Antimicrobial Stewardship Committee, Infection Control Committee, Infection Prevention Task Force, and Sepsis on the Floors Task Force. In 2018, she was a recipient of Heroes of Infection Prevention Safety Award in Patient Safety from the Association of Professionals in Infection Control (APIC). In addition, she serves as a member of the Quality Improvement Committee for the Infectious Diseases Society of America.

“I am extremely grateful for this opportunity to reduce sepsis mortality through serving as Chief Medical Officer for Sepsis Alliance,” said Dr. Hou. “I look forward to supporting their patient advocacy work and being a resource for the organization’s incredible work.”

In 2016, Jefferson Health-New Jersey, previously Kennedy Health, was recognized as a Sepsis Hero for their demonstrated system-wide commitment to improving treatment and outcomes from sepsis. Dr. Hou continues to exemplify the work of a Sepsis Hero, sharing her expertise, knowledge, and passion during multiple conferences, webinars, and interview opportunities.

“Dr. Hou has been an asset to our work over the past few years, particularly our expansion into antimicrobial resistant infections,” said Thomas Heymann, Sepsis Alliance President and CEO. “Her knowledge and insight have helped us educate thousands of people on the most complicated infections that can lead to sepsis, and we are thrilled she accepted the role of Chief Medical Officer.”

Dr. Hou graduated from Yale with a BS in biology. She received her MA and MBA from Boston University, and DO from the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Hou is board certified in internal medicine and infectious diseases. She is fellowed by the American College of Osteopathic Internists, the American College of Physicians, and the Infectious Diseases Society of America.
