sepsis alliance, john m. samuels San Diego, Calif, April 24, 2019 – Sepsis Alliance, the nation’s leading sepsis organization, is pleased to announce that John Samuels, the Founder and CEO of Better Health Advisors, has joined its Board of Directors. During his time as a senior hospital leader, Samuels witnessed the often devastating human consequences of sepsis in the emergency department. This first-hand experience with sepsis inspired him to join the Sepsis Alliance Board in its mission to save lives and reduce suffering from sepsis – the body’s life-threatening response to an infection that takes a life every two minutes.

Samuels’ tenure in healthcare is marked by a ceaseless effort to improve patient care and satisfaction. During his two decades of work in hospitals, he sat at the helm of a system that touched nearly 800,000 lives per year, and was responsible for the operation of 16 emergency departments and a rapidly expanding network of urgent care centers.

“We are excited to have John join our board,” said Steve Maupin, Sepsis Alliance Board Chair. “His deep understanding of hospital operations and leadership experience will provide us with invaluable guidance as we work towards a world in which no one is harmed by sepsis.”

“I joined the Sepsis Alliance Board of Directors because I believe that with my proven experience improving patient care in the healthcare setting, I can help Sepsis Alliance make a significant impact in the fight against sepsis,“ said Samuels, who graduated from the Academy of Healthcare Leadership Advancement at Cornell University and has a Masters of Public Health from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.

In the United States, sepsis affects 1.7 million people and takes 270,000 lives each year. More than 75,000 children develop severe sepsis per year in the United States and 6,800 of these children die, more than from pediatric cancers. This deadly condition is also the number one cost of hospitalization in the nation, consuming more than $27 billion each year.
