Danaher and Sepsis Alliance Work Together to Improve Sepsis Care

January 17, 2020

San Diego, Calif  – Sepsis Alliance, the nation’s first and leading sepsis organization, and Danaher, a global science and technology innovator committed to helping customers solve complex challenges and improving quality of life around the world, today announced their collaboration to improve sepsis care and to help save lives.

Sepsis is the body’s life-threatening response to infections that takes an estimated 270,000 lives each year in the United States. It claims more lives than opioid overdoses, breast cancer, and prostate cancer combined. The Sepsis Coordinator Network (SCN), an online peer-to-peer community created by Sepsis Alliance, provides healthcare professionals with sepsis best practice resources, tools, and a peer-to-peer support forum. The SCN has over 2,200 members in all 50 states, and internationally, who cover more than 600,000 hospital beds.

“The Sepsis Coordinator Network is a crucial resource for healthcare providers to learn and share best practices with each other, and to improving overall patient outcomes,” said Thomas Heymann, President and Executive Director, Sepsis Alliance. “Without committed partners like Danaher, Sepsis Alliance would not be able to offer healthcare providers access to this important information.”

Recently, Sepsis Alliance surveyed SCN members and found that 81% of users indicated that the SCN has helped them make improvements in their facility.

“Danaher is proud to partner with Sepsis Alliance in promoting awareness of sepsis as a significant global challenge”, said David H. Persing, MD, PhD,  Chief Scientific Officer of the Danaher Diagnostics Platform.  The Danaher Diagnostics Platform is composed of Cepheid, Radiometer, Beckman Coulter, and Leica Biosystems Operating Companies and has an ongoing cross-operating company platform-level initiative to solve critical unmet needs in sepsis.  “The early diagnosis of sepsis, combined with timely intervention, is in need of disruptive innovation and we hope to play a major role in this effort going forward”, he said.

A key program within the sepsis initiative, spearheaded by Beckman Coulter, and being developed in part with Federal funds from the Department of Health and Human Services; Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response; Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority, Division of Research Innovation and Ventures, is to develop a digital diagnostic solution which combines clinical data from laboratory tests and patient data from electronic health records in a predictive machine learning algorithm expected to more accurately detect sepsis early and improve patient outcomes.
