Erin Kay Flatley Spirit Award Winner: KY FCCLA

KY FCCLA, Erin Kay Flatley Spirit Award, sepsisFamily, Career and Community Leaders of America is a nonprofit Organization that comprises over 160,000 school-age men and women in Family and Consumer Sciences education in more than 5,300 chapters across the country. Members address important personal, work, and societal issues through Family and Consumer Sciences education.

The Kentucky chapter has worked closely with Darrell Raikes, a sepsis survivor and advocate, to help educate children and teens about sepsis. Their state-wide campaign has raised over $20,000 for sepsis awareness and education in the state of Kentucky.

In 2017-2018, one of the organization’s goals was to complete 100 sepsis awareness activities. In May 2018, the Kentucky FCCLA State Convention helped bring sepsis awareness to about 1,000 people from all over the state.

FCCLA’s efforts to increase sepsis awareness in Kentucky, particularly in this age group, shows great promise. As more of these young men and women learn about sepsis, they can – in turn – educate friends, family members, even coworkers, about this often fatal condition.

Sepsis Alliance is proud to honor the Kentucky chapter of FCCLA with the Erin K. Flatley Spirit Award for 2019.
