Sepsis Alliance and Outfront Media Collaborate to Raise Sepsis Awareness in New Jersey

OUTFRONT Media donates billboards to spread awareness about sepsis, a life-threatening response to infection that kills more than 258,000 Americans every year

SAN DIEGO, CA (September 5, 2017) – Sepsis Alliance and OUTFRONT Media (NYSE: OUT), one of the largest out-of-home media companies in North America, today launched a new marketing campaign in New Jersey to raise public awareness about sepsis, a life-threatening response to infection that can lead to tissue damage, organ failure, and death. The campaign coincides with Sepsis Awareness Month, which takes place every September, and will run on billboards throughout the state for the rest of the year.

The new billboards honor JonyRose Filip, who died from sepsis that developed from a urinary tract infection (UTI) in 2010. JonyRose was an aspiring fashion photographer and just 23 when she passed away.

“We’re proud to work with businesses like OUTFRONT who understand the urgent need to make more people aware of sepsis,” said Thomas Heymann, executive director of Sepsis Alliance. “Lives can be saved just by raising awareness, so these billboards not only honor JonyRose’s memory but could save someone else’s life.”

According to the NJ Department of Health, sepsis was the seventh leading cause of death in the state in 2015, when about 2,100 people died of sepsis.

“We’re excited to work with Sepsis Alliance and help raise sepsis awareness throughout New Jersey,” said Jon Antal, General Manager of OUTFRONT Media New Jersey. “Sepsis is life-threatening, making it critical to get spread the word and one way we’re able to support that mission is with this billboard campaign.”

More than 258,000 people die from sepsis every year in the U.S., a mortality rate greater than prostate cancer, breast cancer and AIDS combined. According to the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP), sepsis was the most expensive in-patient cost in American hospitals in 2014 at nearly $24 billion each year. Forty percent of patients diagnosed with severe sepsis do not survive.
