Attorney Mitchell Epner joins the Board of Directors of Sepsis Alliance, the nation’s leading patient advocacy organization promoting sepsis awareness.

San Diego, California – (September 29, 2015) – Sepsis Alliance, the nation’s leading patient advocacy organization promoting sepsis awareness, today announced that Mitchell Epner has joined its Board of Directors. Epner is an attorney at Hughes Hubbard & Reed. Epner is a graduate of Dartmouth College and Harvard Law School.

Mr. Epner’s desire to join the Sepsis Alliance team was driven by personal experience, having seen close friends lose loved ones to the condition. “I hope that Sepsis Alliance will continue to raise public and medical professional awareness of sepsis, so that life-saving treatment can be started early and thousands of people saved from preventable death,” Epner said. “I also hope that in time, Sepsis Alliance will be instrumental in both lowering the mortality rate from sepsis and assisting sepsis survivors in dealing with the myriad of physical and psychological issues that they confront.”

“We welcome Mr. Epner to the SA board,” Dr. Jim O’Brien, Sepsis Alliance Medical Director and Board Chair, said. “Both his personal and professional experience will provide us with guidance as we move forward with our mission.”

Sepsis, sometimes called blood poisoning by the general public, is a medical emergency that occurs when the body’s response to infection begins to injure its own tissues and organs. It is estimated that 258,000 people in the U.S. die every year from sepsis, a preventable condition requiring early diagnosis and rapid treatment.
