Joel O’Driscoll Joins Sepsis Alliance Board of Directors

April 16, 2019

San Francisco business leader, Joel O’Driscoll, joins the Sepsis Alliance Board of Directors to help save lives from sepsis – the leading cause of death in U.S. hospitals.

San Diego, Calif, April 16, 2019 – Sepsis Alliance, the nation’s leading sepsis organization, is pleased to announce that Joel O’Driscoll, a Managing Director and the Leader of Alvarez & Marsal’s West Region Corporate Performance Improvement practice, has joined its Board of Directors. Both O’Driscoll’s wife and daughter survived sepsis. This personal connection to sepsis inspired him to join the Sepsis Alliance Board in its mission to save lives and reduce suffering from sepsis – the body’s life-threatening response to an infection that takes a life every 2 minutes.

O’Driscoll has extensive leadership experience helping corporate and private equity executives create greater value through improved financial performance, enabling technology and restructuring operations. He plans to lend his expertise in business and finance to help accelerate Sepsis Alliance’s growth and impact.

“We are very excited to have Joel join our board,” said Steve Maupin, Sepsis Alliance Board Chair. “His professional and personal experience will provide us with invaluable insight as we work towards our goal of raising sepsis awareness to reduce morbidity and mortality from sepsis.”

“Our family has experienced sepsis on four separate occasions. I nearly lost my wife at the age of 24 to post-partum sepsis. My daughter has survived sepsis 3 times from various, common infections. It’s an honor to serve on the Sepsis Alliance board, helping to raise awareness and reducing sepsis-related deaths,” said O’Driscoll.

In the United States, sepsis affects 1.7 million people and takes 270,000 lives each year. More than 75,000 children develop severe sepsis each year in the United States and 6,800 of these children die, more than from pediatric cancers. This deadly condition is also the number one cost of hospitalization in the nation, consuming more than $27 billion each year.
