September 29th, 2015

Dr. Flatley, who founded the organization in 2004 after losing his 23-year-old daughter to sepsis, has officially returned to Sepsis Alliance’s Board of Directors.

San Diego, California – (September 29, 2015) – Sepsis Alliance, the nation’s leading patient advocacy organization committed to raising sepsis awareness, is pleased to announce that its founder, Carl Flatley, DDS, MSD, has transitioned from an advisory role to a full-fledged member of its Board of Directors.

Dr. Flatley founded the American Sepsis Alliance in 2004, which changed its name to Sepsis Alliance in 2007. His conviction and passion for raising awareness of sepsis came from the passing of his 23 year-old daughter, Erin, to sepsis in 2002. His story of loss has inspired thousands of individuals, hospitals, and organizations to join him in the fight to raise awareness of sepsis as a medical emergency.

“We are pleased to welcome back Sepsis Alliance’s founder, Dr. Flatley to our Board of Directors,” said Dr. Jim O’Brien, Sepsis Alliance Medical Director and Board Chair. “Dr. Flatley brings with him a wealth of experience gained not only from his deeply personal tragedy, but from his tireless work with survivors and family members who have also lost loved ones to this terrible disease.”

While attending the 4th Annual Sepsis Heroes Gala in New York City on September 17, Dr. Flatley, a lifelong NASCAR fan, had the opportunity to present one of the awards to 2015 honoree, Sam Bass, the first officially licensed artist of NASCAR, and sepsis survivor.

Sepsis, sometimes called blood poisoning by the general public, is a medical emergency that occurs when the body’s response to infection begins to injure its own tissues and organs. It is estimated that 258,000 people in the U.S. die every year from sepsis, a preventable condition requiring early diagnosis and rapid treatment.
