A Special Note From Sepsis Alliance’s Executive Director

Thomas Heymann - Executive Director

We start 2018 with a warm welcome to all our supporters, people who have been here over the years and those who are reading this newsletter for the first time. So much has happened over the past 10 years in terms of our outreach as an organization and our growth as we work towards our mission of saving lives and reducing suffering by raising awareness of sepsis as a medical emergency. Next Monday, I will be sending out our year in review, outlining our achievements in 2017, all of them the result of help and support from people like you: survivors, loved ones of people lost to sepsis, industry innovators, and healthcare professionals who are working hard to help those who have or have had sepsis. Thank you for your continued support as visitors to our site and social media, Faces of Sepsis contributors, volunteers, speakers, and generous contributors. We couldn’t do this without you.

Happy New Year,

Thomas Heymann
Executive Director

Sepsis Webinar Series

Last year, Sepsis Alliance introduced a new sepsis webinar series, Sepsis: Across the Continuum of Care. Previous recordings are now available for viewing at your convenience. They include:

  • Nurses Suspect Sepsis, with Sharon L. Hanson, MN, RN, CCRN
  • Antibiotic Stewardship and Sepsis: A Balancing Act, with Melinda Neuhauser, PharmD; Eddie Stenehjem, MD; and George Sakoulas, MD
  • Sepsis Improvement Through a Collaborative Approach, with Andre Vovan, MD
  • New Sepsis Intervention Initiatives in Home Care and Beyond, with Al Cardillo; Amy Bowerman, RN; and Eve Bankert, MT

The response from nurses, other healthcare providers, and members of the public has been overwhelmingly positive. The program will continue in February, with the next topic to be announced shortly.

The webinars are designed to address sepsis-related needs and concerns in the healthcare community. If you have a topic you would like to see addressed, please send your idea to info@sepsis.org.

Thank You

Thank you to everyone who supported the Sepsis Alliance year-end campaign, which began on #GivingTuesday. You helped us exceed our $50,000 fundraising goal! All funds raised are used to help create and provide sepsis education materials and resources for the public and healthcare providers. This includes sepsis brochures and symptoms cards, the creation of videos like Sepsis and Children and Nurses Suspect Sepsis, as well as information on our site, such as our Sepsis and… series. Thank you for your continued support

Faces of Sepsis Spotlight

Contributions to Faces of Sepsis continue and we now have over 750 stories of survivorship and loss. People write to share their own experiences, parents write about children, children about parents, and spouses about partners. Some stories are inspiring, some sad – but they all share the same goal: the contributor wants to raise sepsis awareness and put a face to the illness. This month’s Faces of Sepsis spotlight shines on Roy Wilson, who died in June last year. His wife of 34 years shared his tribute.

New Sepsis Pamphlets Available

Are you looking for a way to share sepsis information in a convenient paper format? We now have new standard-size trifold format pamphlets:

Members of the public may also order pamphlets to keep for themselves or to hand out to friends, family, and colleagues. Please visit our store to order these new pamphlets and other sepsis awareness products.

Thanks to a generous donor, we are printing and mailing the first 1,000 Life After Sepsis tri-folds free of charge.
