Sepsis Alliance Partners with Children’s Hospital Association to Deliver Two New Pediatric Sepsis Webinars

Two webinars, “The Battle Against Sepsis: Nurses Leading Change” and “Sepsis Recognition: Educating High-Risk Patient Populations” will be offered free of charge to promote improved outcomes among children’s hospitals and pediatric caregivers.
San Diego, CA – Sepsis Alliance is partnering with Children’s Hospital Association (CHA) to produce two new webinars in CHA’s Sepsis Webinar Series.
CHA is the voice of children’s hospitals nationally, representing more than 220 children’s hospitals. As part of this series, CHA has teamed together with Sepsis Alliance, the leading patient advocacy organization in North America which helps save lives by raising awareness of sepsis as a medical emergency. The Sepsis Webinar Series brings national pediatric sepsis experts together for free webinars to help improve sepsis recognition and treatment among children’s hospitals and pediatric caregivers.
“The audience reach we will achieve by partnering with Sepsis Alliance is significant,” said Mimi Saffer, Vice President, Quality Improvement and Quality Measurement at Children’s Hospital Association. “Working together, we can raise sepsis awareness and share valuable educational tools and information faster and further, which will save lives.”
The first webinar will take place on February 21, 2018 at 2:00 pm EST. Beth Wathen MSN, PNP, CCRN, from Children’s Hospital Colorado, and Wendi Redfern MSN, RN, ACNS-BC, from Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, will come together to present The Battle Against Sepsis: Nurses Leading Change. Nurses play an integral role in the process of rapid identification and interventions for the pediatric sepsis patient. Wathen and Redfern are both critical care nursing leaders and winners of the 2017 Sepsis Alliance Erin K. Flatley Pediatric Sepsis Award. They will join Children’s Hospital Association to share their strategies to improve pediatric sepsis recognition and treatment at their respective institutions. Sepsis Alliance founder, Dr. Carl Flatley will also share his story of losing his daughter, Erin, to sepsis and his determination to save lives in her memory.
The second webinar, Sepsis Recognition: Educating High-Risk Patient Populations, will feature Hillary Spangler, MD from UNC Children’s Hospital on April 10, 2018 at 12:00 pm EST. In 2017, the Pediatric Hematology-Oncology clinic at UNC Children’s Hospital, in conjunction with their Family Advisory Board, took an ambitious step in developing education for this patient population. Dr. Spangler was treated for sepsis as a child at UNC Children’s Hospital, and will share her journey of sepsis survival and how her team assembled their first family sepsis initiative. The initiative educated over 500 families on the signs and symptoms of sepsis. Dr. Spangler received the Sepsis Heroes award from Sepsis Alliance in 2016.
“More than 75,000 children develop severe sepsis each year across the country, taking more young lives than childhood cancers,” said Tom Heymann, Executive Director of Sepsis Alliance. “Sepsis Alliance, through our Erin’s Campaign for Kids initiative, has been working tirelessly to help parents and caregivers recognize the signs of sepsis, through creating materials such as the Sepsis and Children video and new Pediatric Sepsis brochure.”
“Partnering with CHA is a natural next step,” added Heymann. “If we can teach parents to get their children to the hospital, the hospital needs to be able to quickly recognize and treat sepsis. Our collaboration aims to help hospitals be ready to act quickly when a patient with sepsis is presented.”
Both webinars are open to CHA member hospitals, as well as pediatric sepsis clinicians in community hospitals focused on improving patient outcomes. Members of the general public and health providers across the continuum of care are also encouraged to attend.
