Tribute

My Mom was admitted into the hospital on February 5, 2018 for a stomach ulcer and was also having some issues with leg weakness. She was discharged 10 days later on February 15, to a skilled nursing facility for physical therapy.

While I was at work on March 2nd, I received a call at about 2:00pm from one of the nurses at the SNF. The nurse said that my Mom became unresponsive, they called 911 and she was going to be taken to the E/R.
At 3:00pm, the nurse called me back and said that paramedics checked her vitals and everything was fine, so she would not be going to the E/R, after all. But, again at 7:00pm, I received another call from the nurse at the SNF. She said my Mom was unresponsive, they called 911 and was going to the E/R.

I got to the E/R at about 8:30 pm and my Mom was struggling to breath, her skin looked gray and she looked panicked. Her oxygen was low, blood pressure low and her heart rate was high. I asked the E/R nurse what was the diagnosis and she said it was pneumonia. (Sepsis and Pneumonia)
At 11:30pm, I asked the nurse if she was going to be admitted. And, she said yes and that my Mom tested positive for the flu virus. (Sepsis and Influenza)
30 minutes later, my Mom went into cardiac arrest and was resuscitated 3 times, then placed on a ventilator and transferred to ICU.

On March 8, they removed the ventilator and she was breathing on her own.
Something still didn’t feel right. Her hands were both very swollen and one hand was an odd color of bluish gray. I also noticed an open abrasion on her wrist, that was red and swollen. I mentioned it to the nurse in ICU who immediately cleaned her arm and bandaged it up.

That night on March 8, I left the ICU at 10:30pm and was going home. While leaving the hospital lobby, I heard a code blue over the intercom/speaker.
And, within 5 minutes, my phone was ringing from the ICU department. My Mom was in cardiac arrest and they were trying to resuscitate her.
When I got back to the ICU, the doctor came out from the room my Mom was in and told me that they did everything they could, but were not successful.
My Mom passed away on March 8, 2018.

On her death certificate, her cause of death was sepsis, pneumonia and cardiopulmonary arrest.
