Today I got to watch the Rachel Ray show and was so surprised to hear about sepsis. I guess I thought I was one of the few that went through this. Myself and all of my friends had never heard of this, but thank God my doctor did.

I live in a small town in Northern Minnesota and in October 2009, there was the big to-do about the flu and its dangers. I had not been feeling well for several days and of course I thought I had the flu. I called the clinic in town. They said just watch it for a couple of days and see what happens. I’m very prone to having bladder and kidney infections and I was fighting one but didn’t think much of it. I kept taking my temperature and it kept going up and up and it started to worry me when it got to 104. I called he clinic and told them I had to see a doctor.

My doctor was not there so I got to see Dr. Allert, who I had never seen but at that point I did not care. By this time about a day and a half had passed with me being sick. From there on things are sort of fuzzy, I remember telling Dr. Allert,”I have never felt so sick” over and over. I’ve had a lot of medical problems, so for me to say that is unusual. The next thing I remember is the doctor telling me: “you need to go to the hospital.” Then, the next thing I remember is all my kids being there and I was being transported by ambulance to the larger city near us, which had more equipment for testing. I ended up in ICU for four days and was released from the hospital in seven days. I truly believe that if it wasn’t for Dr. Allert, I would be dead.

I was amazed after seeing the show today how deadly it is, how curable it is and how often it is not diagnosed. Lots of antibiotics by IV took care of it.

I am 65 now, and thank God I don’t have horrible side effects like some, but I have noticed changes after it all happened. My memory has been terrible, of course I have blamed that all on age. But when I look back, it happened like over night, not remembering things I have done for years on a daily basis. I guess what I am saying is I don’t feel so bad now about those symptoms.

I have thanked Dr. Allert over and over for her being on the ball and realizing what was going on, but more than ever, I now realize what she did. Seeing this show today I so hope that more people and more doctors become aware of this.

Thank you for letting me share this with you, I hope it will save someone’s life.
