To date, I have lost two loved ones to sepsis but I don’t want this story to be about me. I don’t want it to be about my pain or my struggle. I want this story to be about my frustration.

I am a healthcare professional with nearly 15 years in the field, and to me, sepsis is preventable. An infection occurs when an area is left untreated for too long which, by definition, means that there is a window of opportunity for preventative measures to be taken. I try not to blame any one person as I understand that things honestly and truly just happen. That being said, I believe that my wife’s mother could have been saved had the symptoms been paid closer attention to. Her altered mental status alone post op was enough to cause concern but there was still talk of discharge.

My mother-in-law paid a price that wasn’t due for some time. My aunt, who passed this past New Year’s Eve, died from sepsis but I believe it was inevitable as she had recently suffered some heart troubles….not to mention a fresh diagnosis of leukemia. Her body was just demolished over a short time.

Fact is, this damn affliction is highly preventable so long as people know more about it. Part of me believes that sepsis may be getting closer and closer to becoming a scapegoat so that the true catalyst for the infection is not to blame, thus removing the need for one accepting responsibility.

I will stand and I will fight for the appropriate awareness. Sepsis is not more important than any other thing that has ripped anyone else from this earth too soon. It is simply what is my current enemy and I will see it destroyed.
