Mason Jackson

Tribute
My son, Mason, died on December 7, 2009 at the age of 34. Mason was a healthy man in the prime of his life until a dental procedure. (Sepsis and Dental Health) Mason lost a crown and made an appointment with a dentist he had never been to before as he had just relocated to Houston from Austin.

The visit lasted over two hours, during which time the dentist commented on the bacteria present under his crown. She reattached the crown and proceeded to do a full mouth debridement that typically involves bleeding of the gums. No antibiotics were offered. This invasive procedure should never have been done with an infection present.

During the following week, Mason felt as if he was fighting off an illness, though his symptoms were vague. One week after the dentist’s appointment, Mason became very ill and visited a 24-hour Emergency Care Facility. They assumed he had strep throat and sent him home with a Z Pack (zithromax, an antibiotic).

The next day he was somewhat better, but two days after that, things became very serious, very quickly. He was admitted into St. Luke’s Hospital, was quickly diagnosed with sepsis and put into CVICU with kidney and liver failure. Over the next three weeks, Mason was diagnosed and treated for fusobacterium endocarditis, ARDS (Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome), multiple pneumothorax and stroke. (Sepsis and ARDS) He had the best of care, but the infection just overwhelmed his body and eventually took his life. Visit www.whenyouloseachild.wordpress.com.
