Maddie B.

Survivor

Maddie was having some leg pain for about a week. Long story short, I insisted on taking her to ED. The night before school started (1st grade)she couldn’t move her leg due to the pain. They tapped her hip and noticed fluid. We thought that was it. She would get some antibiotics and go home the next day. Thank GOD for the doctor we had in hospital. He told me “he can’t go home and sleep knowing he didn’t check to see if she was septic,” but he didn’t think she was.

As Maddie was waking from anesthesia, the nurse came in and said she is septic and they rushed her into surgery. She had in infection in her hip and her white blood cell count was over 100,000. Her diagnosis was a septic hip. The doctor told me if I would have waited another day, the outcome would have been different. I thank GOD everyday that the doctor was so thorough.

I’m happy to say Maddie is a happy healthy 10-year-old. She loves playing soccer and to dance. It was a frightening experience especially for her. And I have never in my life heard a a child being septic before this. When the doctor said that, my response was, isn’t that something elderly people get. Just as a side note she never once had a fever. The only red flag was the pain.
