Justina Ford Brown

Survivor

My daughter was only 5 days old and I really don’t remember much. I’d fallen asleep with my coat on as I was cold. I woke up and was soaking wet. I assume with breast milk although it could have been sweat. Then it all goes blank. (Sepsis and Pregnancy & Childbirth)

I awoke in hospital after having an emergency operation for mastitis to find a drain had been inserted and I’d suffered sepsis. I spent 5 days in hospital away from my week-old baby as she couldn’t be in hospital with me due to infection risk. This impacted on my life in a huge way. I failed to bond, which led to severe post natal depression. Without going into detail, it was the worst year of my life and I was on the verge of being sectioned. I spent years on antidepressants and have never really forgiven myself for something I had no control of if that makes sense..sepsis didn’t take my life but took a huge chunk of it.
