John Rauscher

On June 14, 2021, my husband John became ill from what we suspected to be food poisoning from raw oysters he had consumed the night before. He was sick to his stomach for about 5 days. On the 6th day he complained of shoulder pain, but assumed he slept on it wrong. A couple days later, the other shoulder and knees started to hurt and he started to swell in his feet.

After 24 hours of pain and reverting to a walker for help with mobility, we called 911 and had him taken to the ER. After 4 hours of waiting, blood work, and general exam, he was dismissed from the ER with a bad case of “rheumatoid arthritis” (he has never had arthritis in his life). We went home, took muscle relaxers, Advil, and iced his joints for relief! 3 days later, his mobility got even worse, his thought process slowed, along with his speech. I rushed him back to the ER!!

After 45 minutes of being there, he lost all speech, cognitive ability, and breathing was labored. He was admitted to the ICU and we were told he was in septic shock, had Group B strep infection which had had time to attack his heart, brain, liver, and kidneys.  (Sepsis and Group B Streptococcus, Sepsis and Septic Shock) It was touch and go for a week. He was put on a ventilator for 5 days to give his organs some relief. After 2 weeks in the ICU, he was admitted to a step down floor where he would stay to finish his antibiotics for 5 weeks and help with his mobility which had still not come back. After 5 weeks, he deleveloped pneumonia and ARDS. (Sepsis and Pneumonia, Sepsis and ARDS) He got put back on a ventilator/trach for 4 weeks in the ICU and died August 31, 2021. 11 weeks from that first ER visit where he was misdiagnosed, sent home to ice his “arthritic joints” to become so sick with sepsis and GBS to a point of no return.

And let me add, this is the same ER who misdiagnosed my pulmonary embolism for a muscle spasm in my chest and sent me home for me to return 2 days later and be admitted for 5 days. As you can tell, I am still so angry at the ER! He may still be here if he was diagnosed appropriately the first time. 3 days wasted icing knees and taking Advil while his body was being attacked! This haunts me everyday! 🥲
