Isaac Bennett

Survivor

Isaac was born with group b strep infection. He had meningitis, pneumonia and sepsis (Sepsis and Group B Streptococcus, Sepsis and Meningitis, Sepsis and Pneumonia). Luckily it was picked up within his first 24 hours. They were concerned about his high pitched cries and lack of interest in feeding. He was jittery and had dry nappies so he went off for evaluation on special care. I had an epidural for labour, so I had to wait to go and see him on special care.

After an hour and a half, I went over to the ward. By then he had gone floppy and unresponsive and they were working on him intensively to save his life.

We were on SCBU for 10 days. He recovered well after a big dose of antibiotics. He has been left with hearing loss and being monitored for learning difficulties but so far we are not seeing any deficit.

I am amazed at how quickly the illness took hold. If we had been discharged by then I’m not sure we would have noticed how ill he was until it was too late. Luckily the midwives were aware of the risk of sepsis, even if I wasn’t!

He is now a happy, active 16 month old and we are grateful for the NHS and the speed they reacted to this hideous illness!
