Elden R. Bailey

Tribute

My 47-year-old brother just died from septic shock. On a Friday he said he “didn’t feel too good.” On Saturday, he complained of abdominal pain and by Sunday he was confused and delirious and was admitted to the ICU unit in critical condition.

The following Monday, the medical personnel called in the family to say goodbye. He lived an additional seven days. His kidneys stopped working, he was on a ventilator, his liver was hit hard and they postponed additional testing since they thought he wouldn’t be alive to see the results.

I never thought my brother would die from an infection, but he did. I will be spreading awareness because we simply had no idea of the symptoms nor the seriousness of being “septic.” I can’t believe it happened so fast with such irreversible damage occurring to his organs. If only we had known the signs and symptoms. If only we had caught it in time.
