Sepsis Alliance Signatory on Letter to Senator Tom Harkin

February 3, 2014

On February 3, a letter was sent to Senator Tom Harkin, Chairman of the Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) to thank him for holding hearings in September 2013 on the topic of healthcare-associated infections and sepsis. This letter was signed by Sepsis Alliance and several interested parties, including the Erin K. Flatley Foundation, Every Mother Counts, Wolters Kluwer and Edwards Lifesciences, to name a few.

The letter (click to read) reminded Senator Harkin of the facts presented by those who testified in front of the committee, and the enormous cost of sepsis and the burden sepsis places on health care. The letter also reminded the Senator of Rory’s Regulations, which were put into effect in the state of New York, that require all hospitals to develop and deploy evidence-based sepsis reduction and quality-of-care protocols. The letter urged Senator Harkin to introduce legislation to require all Medicare-participating hospitals to adopt evidence-based sepsis protocols, which will reduce the incidence of sepsis and positively impact sepsis survivors.

You can help, too. By contacting your representatives and telling them how important it is that sepsis be addressed now, that policy makers put a priority on recognizing and treating sepsis, you can help make our voices louder.
