Survivor

My journey with Sepsis began September 21, 2012. I had been on vacation in Florida and my mother-in-law said I just wasn’t acting right. I was tired and just kept sleeping…so unlike me. She took my temperature and it was 100 degrees. She said that we needed to go to Urgent Care where they stated I had Strep throat, but never tested me for it. (Sepsis and Strep Throat) They gave me antibiotics and sent me on my way. We flew back to Columbus back from vacation. All I wanted to do was sleep.

On September 23rd my husband said that I needed to eat something and fixed me soup and a drink with electrolytes, I couldn’t even hold the spoon I was shaking so bad. I became violently ill and threw up. I just lay on the bathroom floor. I couldn’t move.

They called the emergency squad where they took me to the hospital. The staff said that I was having a reaction to the antibiotics that Urgent Care had given me and sent me home. I laid in bed all day the following day. The next day, my daughter came in and said I needed to drink a gallon of water or we were going to the emergency room. Needless to say we went to the emergency room. Luckily we did because the doctors stated I wouldn’t have made it another day.

I was placed in ICU for five days and laid on cooling beds to try to break my fever, which was 106. After numerous tests and antibiotics, my fever broke!

I was finally given another room where I was closely monitored. I was released from the hospital five days later.

Sepsis plays such havoc on your system, I had no idea I was so sick, that I didn’t have organ shut down, amputations. I am now on the road to recovery! I’m thankful to my family and everyone who were so diligent in making me go the hospital. I hope this website makes people more aware of this deadly bacterial disease.
