Mary Roberts

Tribute

My grandmother, Mary, passed away from sepsis last week. This was her second time with sepsis, but this time it took her life.

Three weeks ago she was her bright bubbly self, and then one morning she called thinking she had the flu. She went to the hospital, where they told her she had shingles. The doctor called the next morning telling her she had staph. The next day, she woke up and did not know who she was.

Mary was rushed to the hospital where they said she had a blood infection, but it was definitely not sepsis. All of us in the family thought it was sepsis, but they insisted it was not. She was transferred to a larger hospital where two days later they figured out she did have sepsis the whole time. She was on every IV and medicine they could put her on. She was in pain, her kidneys were shutting down, and her heart was weak. My family had to make the tough decision to not put her on dialysis since her heart was too weak to function with the dialysis.

Sepsis had taken over her whole body. After a week of her body getting weaker and her mind slowly going away, she was sent to heaven. If it would have been caught earlier, her life could have been saved. She is missed dearly.
