On October 1, 2010, I awoke in the middle of the night with very sharp pains on the lower left side of my back. At the hospital the CT showed I had a kidney stone. (Sepsis and Kidney Stones) They admitted me and 24 hours later I’m fighting for my life.

Within hours I went from being in pain to in and out of consciousness. My blood pressure dropped to 63/34 and they had no idea what was wrong. They rushed me to a bigger hospital where I was on life support for a week. They told my family I probably would not make it. Next thing I know I wake up with this tube down my throat and I want it out! Later that day they took me off the ventilator and I had no idea where I was or how close I came to dying. Finally two days later I get out of ICU and one of my doctors tells me I shouldn’t be here but he is glad I am.

A week later I get to go home with drain tube in my back because yes, I still had the kidney stone that caused all this! I wasn’t strong enough to live through surgery for three more weeks. So about three weeks and two surgeries later along with 10 months of rehab I was able to go back to work. Well the problem was my hometown small hospital didn’t know what sepsis even was. Had they known, I wouldn’t have had to almost die. I hope people are getting educated on sepsis..
